ICAR-DFR participated in the First International Agro Biodiversity Congress organized by the Indian Society of Plant Genetic Resources (ISPGR) and Bioversity International, in collaboration with Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Right Authority (PPV & FRA)(Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare), National Biodiversity Authority (Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change), Trust for Advancement of Agricultural Science (TAAS), National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) and Asia – Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions (APAARI) along with many national and international sponsors from 6th to 9th November 2016. The Congress was inaugurated by the Honorable Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi on 6th Nov 2016 at Vigyan Bhawan.The ICAR-DFR Stall showcased the diversity in traditional flowers with fresh samples of traditional flowers, value added floral products like veni, garlands, bunches, floral crowns, floral plaits etc. that were sourced from Pune and ICAR, DFR Regional Station at Vemagiri, Kadiyam, Andhra Pradesh.
Diversity in marigold germplasm from IARI, New Delhi, diversity in dry flower products from YSPHUH&F, Solan, BCKV, Kalyani were well appreciated by the visitors. Floral crown made of traditional flowers, coconut flowers from Andhra Pradesh, Vara mala made of rose petals were the major attraction of the diversity exhibited in the stall.
Diversity in rose, chrysanthemum, marigold, gladiolus, crossandra, tuberose varieties developed through AICRP on Floriculture were showcased through posters. The way of Indian usage of flowers was depicted as ‘Floriculture in Indian Culture’. The diversity in specialty flowers form KAU, Vehanikkara native flowers from YSPHUH&F Solan were also showcased.
Father of Green Revolution in India, Dr. M.S. Swaminathan accompanied by Senior functionaries of the organizing committee of Agro Biodiversity Congress visited the ICAR-DFR stall organized during the 1st International Agro Biodiversity Congress 2016 at NASC complex, New Delhi.
Dr. M.S. Swaminathan was presented the inaugural Newsletter ‘Flori News’ of ICAR-DFR and the base paper on “Phytoplasam Diseases in Horticultural Crops Current Scenario and Future Challenges”.
Dr. T. Janakiram, ADG Horticulture and Dr. K.V.Prasad Director DFR, Pune explained the diversity in ornamental crops that was exhibited during the event. Dr. T. Janakiram presented a floral crown to Dr. M. S. Swaminathan.
